Wildland Firefighting Strategies & Tactics
Tuesday March 25, 2025
As we turn the corner from winter to spring, we also begin the higher risk season for brush Fires and wildfires.
C-S Fire is preparing to counter this increased risk by honing our skills and testing our equipment used to fight brush fires in our area. The members of C-S Fire participated in 5 different skills stations, including using hand tools to cut a fire line. You may have seen this technique if you watch the popular TV show Fire Country. We have also practiced water supply drills both at the road and in the field or woods. We have an array of remote water source equipment and techniques to quickly extinguish the flames wherever they may be, including portable pumps, lightweight wildland hoses, and water-tank backpacks.
Our Pump Operators also practiced using our Mid-Size pumper in a special configuration called pump-and-roll. In this scenario the fire engine pumps water and drives simultaneously. A special feature that all of our other pumpers cannot do. In turn this allows our firefighters to have much more mobility and increased water supply while attacking fast spreading or larger area field fires.
As a community, we all need to be careful when burning branches during the dry times. Remember, the NYS DEC burn ban is in effect for a reason, to keep us all safe. But in the event that a brush or field fire does happen, the C-S Firefighters are ready to handle any situation quickly and professionally.
Stay Safe.
