New Sardinia Heavy Rescue 7 is In Service!
Tuesday February 22, 2024
After 5 years of hard work, the Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company is excited to announce that our new-to-us heavy rescue truck is now in service! The new truck is a 2010 Ferrara/HME heavy rescue and is replacing our 1996 International heavy rescue. This truck provides us with much needed upgrades in storage, equipment accessibility and passenger safety.
A committee was formed in 2019 to begin investigating a replacement for the 1996 heavy rescue truck. The committee spent around one year exploring different options and designs for heavy rescue trucks. After compiling a list of needs, the committee built a specification for a new heavy rescue truck and put it out for bid. Unfortunately, due to drastic price increases in the fire apparatus market, it was decided that a new custom apparatus would not be feasible. Attention was turned to the used market, where the 2010 Ferrara/HME truck was found. The fire company thoroughly investigated the used rescue truck and purchased it in fall 2023. Throughout the winter, members of the New Vehicle Committee have worked to make upgrades and mount equipment on the new truck. Last night, the hard work concluded with orientation training for all our members.
Sardinia Rescue 7 will continue to fill the role of providing vehicle extrication and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) services to the Town of Sardinia and surrounding communities. The truck is equipped with a full complement of hydraulic and battery powered rescue tools, Dewalt power tools, Paratech rescue struts, hydraulic jacks, emergency medical equipment and hand tools to tackle any rescue situation. Rapid Intervention Team equipment is also kept on board to provide firefighter rescue in the event of a MAYDAY.
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone involved in this replacement project… Darling Fabrication, Harbor Freight of Springville, and the New Vehicle Committee, line officers, board of directors and the membership of the Chaffee-Sardinia Fire Company!
