NYS "Burn Ban" In Effect

Tuesday March 25, 2025

The annual statewide ban on residential brush burning is in effect from March 16 through May 14.  During this time, open burning is restricted as described by New York State Codes, Rules and Regulations Part 215.

There is typically confusion and frustration regarding the burn ban.  However, this rule plays a crucial role in preventing brush and wildfires during the driest part of the year.  Just one spark from unauthorized fires can cause dry leaves, grass and brush to ignite.  When combined with low humidity and high winds, these fires can spread faster than fire crews can knock them down.  While it may seem like an inconvenience, refraining from open burning during this period could prevent a major wildfire outbreak.
